One such project is Varilight (Reduced VARIation in the manufacturing processes enabling LIGHTweight welded structures) in collaboration with KTH - [the Swedish] Royal Institute of Technology, in Stockholm - and several industrial and academic partners. A box-welded structure - a common component in spreaders - has been investigated within the project.
The White Paper is co-authored by Dr Mansoor Khurshid, Head of Structural Science at Bromma and Lars Meurling, the company’s VP EMEA & Marketing.

Spreader manufacturer Bromma has released a new "White Paper" on the evolution of scientific methods for structural life assessment and its application for lightweight spreader design.

"This white paper addresses how methods for the life length assessment of complex steel structures are applied on crane spreaders and how the results relate to reality, says Bromma. The main findings of the research indicate that when more advanced calculation methods are applied, the outcome is more in line with reality. By applying the more advanced methods - even though applicable standards are less stringent – manufacturers of lifting equipment can lead the development towards more durable and also potentially safer steel structures and products.

The White Paper includes results from fatigue strength tests performed on box welded structures. The results show that there is a significant difference in the precision of different fatigue strength evaluation methodologies, when applied on complex welded joints in crane spreaders.
